In Mediterranean countries, domestic water use accounts for a minor part of water consumption, however, it requires the best quality and its demand is continuously growing. Moreover, urban water is still the main cause of pollution of rivers and groundwater, even when treated before being discharged. This operation will initiate the implementation of sustained environmental monitoring in marine waters with the aim to assess the state of Malta’s marine waters on a continuous basis and address current knowledge gaps. It will also contribute to the implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning and the Integrated Maritime Policy through knowledge improvement.
