The objective of the LIFE-IP RBMP-MALTA project is to support the implementation of the second River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) through the establishment of an integrated framework for the optimised management of all water resources on the Maltese islands. AquaCycle aims to address the present situation of water scarcity in the southern Mediterranean region, with a mission to change the present model of wastewater reuse, and of imposing an eco-innovative technology (including anaerobic digestion, constructed wetland, solar treatment). This operation will initiate the implementation of sustained environmental monitoring in marine waters with the aim to assess the state of Malta’s marine waters on a continuous basis and address current knowledge gaps. In Mediterranean countries, domestic water use accounts for a minor part of water consumption, however, it requires the best quality and its demand is continuously growing. Moreover, urban water is still the main cause of pollution of rivers and groundwater, even when treated before being discharged.
